UK Deer Legislation – Hunting Regulations

We often get asked for information on deer stalking in the UK and we all know that stalking in the UK offers some excellent opportunities for both national and international hunters. Here is some basic information on the law.

It’s important to remember that deer legislation across the UK is not consistent across all countries and rules in Scotland and Northern Ireland are different from that in England and Wales. In our experience and as an example, hunters may decide to stalk one species of deer in Scotland and another in England. This means different laws for each.

Here are just a few reminders:

The Deer Acts allows occupiers to protect their crops from excessive damage and permits the killing of an animal to prevent suffering. Please remember that the stalker must not:

1. Only use legal firearms
2. Shoot out of season unless authorised
3. Shoot at night. Shooting is not allowed one hour after sunset to one hour before sunrise except under licence
4. Shoot from a moving vehicle
5. Use a vehicle to drive deer
6. Sell venison in Scotland, except to a licensed venison dealer

Please Note:
A Game Licence is no longer needed to kill or take deer anywhere in the UK.

Firearms & Ammunition
The stalker is only allowed to use a rifle and ammunition which is legal for the species of deer and the stalker should be guided by knowledge, experience and personal preference in their choice of a rifle and calibre. The legal requirements are laid down in the Deer Acts.

ENGLAND & WALES

For Muntjac and Chinese Water Deer:
A rifle with a minimum calibre of .220 inches and muzzle energy of no less than 1000 foot pounds. A bullet weight of no less than 50 grains may be used.

All deer of any species:
A minimum calibre of .240 and minimum muzzle energy of 1,700 foot pounds is the legal requirement.

NORTHERN IRELAND

For Muntjac and Chinese Water deer:
A rifle with a minimum calibre of .220 inches and muzzle energy of no less than 1000 foot pounds. A bullet weight of no less than 50 grains may be used.

All deer of any species:
A minimum calibre of .236 inches, a minimum bullet weight of 100 grains and minimum muzzle energy of 1,700 foot pounds is the legal requirement.

SCOTLAND

Roe Deer:
The bullet must weigh at least 50 grains and have a minimum muzzle velocity of 2,450 feet per second. A minimum muzzle energy of 1,000 foot pounds may be used.

All deer of any species:
The bullet must weigh at least 100 grains and have a minimum muzzle velocity of 2,450 feet per second and a minimum muzzle energy of 1,750 foot pounds.

PLEASE NOTE that all these figures are the minimum legal requirement.

For all deer stalking the bullet must be of a type designed to expand/deform on impact. For example soft nose or ballistic tip.
